This question has been driving me insane, so many people (Caucasians, mainly) think that having Afro hair is so ‘cool’ because when we wake up every morning, our hair looks like this-
However my hair is most definitely not of the microphone Afro variety and I’m still trying to work out just what it is. Whilst trying to figure it out, I have had to hear some harsh truths from hair stylists concerning my hair, one is that my natural hair will never- despite how many rollers and straws I stick into it- look like this-
So no soft, spiral curls for me then, what to do? I’ve always admired celebrities who manage to look stunning with their chic, pixie-like hairstyles and for me, Halle Berry is one of the best of them. However, to achieve the below straight finish, I will have to put chemicals in my hair and for now, I want my hair to stay 100% natural. A few decades too late, I finally want to learn how to deal with what the good Lord gave me and learn, somehow, to love it. So this look is not an option for me either-
How about doing an Ace Ventura quiff?-
Well first of all, I believe I would need to have my hair straightened to achieve that kind of sharp finish and secondly as the winds are blowing with great gusto in Berlin, I believe this hair style has a very short shelf-outdoor-life.
I could do an ‘ol school Sisquo (Big Brother UK, really Sisquo, ok, back on topic) and dye it blonde-
Well not only does full on blonde not suit my complexion, (unless I want to look like I wandered of the set of a Beenie Man dancehall video), I can’t achieve those curls naturally…I don’t think.
‘Fro Hawks are a versatile go-to afro hair style and I would love to cornrow the sides of my hair to achieve this look, but the whole point of going natural was to leave every strand of my hair well alone-
I am getting quite desperate now, how about I do what every high fashion magazine does when they get a black model with a strong face, i.e do a ‘Grace Jones’-
Or better yet why don’t I just shave everything of, that way I will have no more hair style woes.
Ok, I have to stay calm and positive, the ‘Grace Jones’ look is great for me at night when I’m at my ‘fiercest’, so that’s my night look done. What about during the day or when I don’t feel like making such a razor-sharp statement? I like the look of this-
I wonder if I can achieve those curls naturally, I don’t want to get too excited, I have to be ready for the hair stylist to let me know again, just how limited my hair choices are, now I’ve undergone the snip.

treating your hair with henna loosens your curls naturally and jheri curl juice helps too
Thanks for the tip! From living in Berlin so far it seems that things like henna are rendered ‘exotic’, so it will be bloody murder to find, I’ll probably have to go to the Turkish populated areas.
Try focusing on moisture. Prepoo (google it) with a good deep conditioner or you can even make your own concoction at home with simple stuff (olive oil, coconut oil is superb too (almost any oil really), honey, aloe, mayo, etc.). And yes you still condition after. Prepoo, wash, condition once a week. Use a leave in conditioner and a curl defining product. Try going on youtube. There’s a plethora of advice (good and bad), it’s really just people experimenting, but some have mastered taking care of their natural hair. Natural hair is harder to take care of (I think), but the good thing is you don’t need special products (i.e. stuff made for afro hair). You just need super moisturizing stuff. Plus use only sulfate free shampoos (sulfates dry out your hair) and never use anything containing alcohol. P.S. Try using natural products made for color/chemical treated hair. They usually contain more stuff to moisturize and strengthen hair. When you achieve the softness and curls you want, you still have to remember the weather will affect your hair. It may shrink, puff up lol, etc, so remember to always have a silk scarf and headband. Again look to youtube for care and style tips. Good luck.
Sorry this is so long.
Please don’t apologise! Thank you so much for taking the time to give me all these great tips, I’ve learnt so much and will follow up accordingly.
Great article! Look forward to seeing what you come up with. One thing we should consider before cutting our hair is the bone structure of our face. Looking forward to your next blog:)
On one hand you are right about people needing to cut their hair according to their bone structure. However for women who have suffered hair loss or have damaged hair as a result of bad hair treatment, tight weaves, braids and the like, vanity cannnot be your friend. Snip that hair and start again, because you will benefit in the long run. I have to say that having my hair short and100% natural has been a real journey as I’m learning what to do with my hair, it has increased my confidence level and I am learning new ways to accessorize and compliment the shortness. I’m on a journey baby, those who ‘get it’ can come along for the ride, others that don’t can kindly hop off the bus!
I am newly natural (big chop in july) and I can completly relate to this post! I am from the U.S so we call it a T.W.A (teenie weenie afro). I have started to accesorize way more since my cut using headbands scarves etc. But overall I love it. You tube has so many tips/ advice on stying you should check into it =)
Best of Luck
Hi Lorel- T.W.A- I love it! You are so right about how short afro hair makes you up your ‘accessorize game’. I have always been drawn to statement hair bands, scarves etc and having a TWA has made me really indulge in that.
In fact, I will be doing a blog post on the subject soon, hope you’ll check it out!

Hello Arden, sorry for my super, super late response. My inspiration to write this article sprung from the intense frustration I felt dealing with my TWA, and I knew if I felt this way, then a bunch of others would too. So I wrote the article to motivate me and others…
Hi.
so put in kinky twist for the winter. Two rounds later I have 3″!!! Currently painstakingly combing out after removal but before the glorious wash. Going to try Jane Carter Solution Hydrating Invigorating Shampoo (SLS free). It was recommended & I’m expecting amazing softening results on my random kinky z-style pattern strands (no curl living on my head either). If it works I’ll invest in the tub of cream (labelled name escapes me) for £12 too but for today I’ll try a 50% cheaper product “Curls Unleashed” from Organic Root Stimulator £7.
This is great! I feel for you. Over processed 12″ natural afro when I made a bad decision to “get manageable curls”. So had drastic chop in June’12 (2mm remained) & home coloured (decided it wouldn’t hurt just 2mm). As my hair grew, I 2-strand twisted for 3 days, let it out for 3 days & washed it on the 7th. Products? Whatever I had but tried to be natural with coconut or avocado oil or shea butter. By Nov’12 I had an inch
Not sure why I typed all that but glad I did. Just wanted to suggest the 3-day twist, 3-day loose, 7th day wash thing. And maybe a colour rinse.
